Now that I have pored over the specs for the S3X, I have a few questions:
1) Does the barcon shifter use a standard square boss, i.e. will it also fit on a downtube mount or a shimano barcon mount?
2) Why only 12 & 13T sprockets in 3/32?
3) What tool is required for the lockring and does it come with the hub?
4) Do you have to specify which shifter/sprocket you want when ordering? Or do you order hub/shifter/sprocket/spacers separately?
5) Can the 130mm model have spacers removed to change the OLD between 120 and 130mm?
6) Who is the Australian disributor?
7) Are they shipping yet? If not, what's the ETA?
8) Pricing for the hub and 144BCD crankset?
Thanks for bringing this product to market, I can't wait to try it out.
Oooh, nice shifters for 3 and 5 speed! Thank you! Will the three speed (SLS30) work with an AW? Will the five speed (SLS50) work with a non-W hub?
Also - I don't think the seatpost mount shifter for the S3X has been mentioned here before. I suspect it could be made to fit many downtubes too (27.2 is close enough to 28.6 with a clamp-on lever, surely?)
Andrew - AIUI the sprockets use standard Hyperglide splines so you can take your pick size wise - ok, maybe not in 1/8".
Any Idea on when they will be shipping out? (i.e. Available in north America, canada preferably)
Andrew: It was mentioned earlier that the driver had Shimano HG splines. Shimano sells individual HG splined sprockets with tall teeth for BMX applications.
Excellent, Bar-end shifters for 3-speed and 5-speed.
Question: What kind of tool is needed for the lockring? From the looks of it, it appears like it has indentations similar to Hollowtech II, however I want confirmation on this.
Outstanding!
Now if the "New for 2005!" web pages could be updated. :)
Wishing you the very best success!
Those FCT cranksets look really promising, especially since they come in 165mm. But are we stuck with those rings? They only come in 1/8", which seem kinda silly, and frankly, I don't like the way they look. But the crank arms are pretty classy, and I'd sure be inclined to buy them if the chainring weren't part of the deal.
Gert, just stick the unwanted ring on ebay - if you pepper the auction with enough buzzwords like "fixie" (or even better, "fixxie") and "track-style" you will easily cover the cost of an attractive replacement.
Agreed the cranks look nice.
1) Does the barcon shifter use a standard square boss, i.e. will it also fit on a downtube mount or a shimano barcon mount?
Do not understand why you want to take our barcon shifter and use a Shimano mount? It will fit on a downtube mount.
2) Why only 12 & 13T sprockets in 3/32?
We have had close to zero interest in 3/32 so there are fewer options.
4) Do you have to specify which shifter/sprocket you want when ordering? Or do you order hub/shifter/sprocket/spacers separately?
This will be up to each individual distributor / dealer.
5) Can the 130mm model have spacers removed to change the OLD between 120 and 130mm?
Yes.
6) Who is the Australian disributor?
Currently no one. But your best bet is to e-mail Greenspeed, parts@greenspeed.com
7) Are they shipping yet? If not, what's the ETA?
8) Pricing for the hub and 144BCD crankset?
No estimate on ETA?
Sorry for the redundancy it is redundant.
Both of my fixed gears use 3/32.
I emailed Greenspeed a few weeks ago, but never heard back. I'll try again.
Still no word on what tool is used for the lockring and if it's supplied with the hub?
Ideally I'd get the thumbshifter if I could then relocate the lever to a Shimano barcon or a downtube boss for ultimate flexibility in bike setups.
You said there was zero interest in the 3/32 cogs. How do you even know that? It's not like the hub is for sale yet. I sure haven't placed my order, though I'd love to be able to. Lots of us use narrow chain on our fixies. Please include more selection on the narrow cogs. Don't take my word for it, read what good old Sheldon had to say about 3/32 chain: "This size is used on bikes with derailers, but is also excellent for fixed-gear bikes. This chain is lighter than the 1/8" size. We recommend this for most road fixed-gear/singlespeed applications."
Is the catalogue intended for the entire English speaking world, or specifically North America? I ask because I'm surprised that an originally British company uses the (IMHO) incorrect term 'fixed gear'.
Free-wheel, fixed-wheel.
duh.
some heritage should be preserved! the fixie kids think riding fixed on the street was invented by NYC messengers.
Aside from that, well done!
By the way, my fixed wheel bike also has a 3/32nd chain.

The hub takes standard Shimano splined cogs. If you need a 3/32" cog, just get one from your LBS.
its april. the hub was due out in march. whats going on? i would really like to get my hands on one.
Is it vaporware? I was hopeing to get this before April.
I've gone through the catalog multiple times and see no mention of the S3X, or of the FRT crankset. What am I doing wrong?
I'd be quite interested in some of this componentry in the road race and mtb race range. Will it be available in Australia or online -anywhere- soon or do we look at the catalogue for nothing? I like the look of the stuff but a realistic idea of availability would be nice too.
Pages 23 through 26 of the Sturmey catalog PDF detail the S3X.
The S3X is real. We are still working on changes that were implemented towards the beginning of the new year. As a result of those changes (Example: Retooling the driver) the release is still pending.
I am sure absolutely no one wants us to push a product out that is not ready. We want to provide everyone with a top quality piece of hardware that will last you a lifetime.
We do apologize to those who are ready for the hub now and are anticipating building a new bike around the hub.
Australian distribution is tricky for us. Currently we do not have any distributors in Australia. Greenspeed is going to help us with the Sturmey Archer side of things but on the Sunrace side we still do not have anyone signed up. Please e-mail me info@sunraceusa.com and I will see if I can help you out.
Sorry for missing the question on the Spline interface for the driver. It is the same spline used on all the new external cup BBs.
To Andrew I am still not sure why you want to use a Shimano barcon? We do make our own barcon mount. But the shifter can mount to a Shimano barcon mount if needed.
Hey guys,
As impatient as I am for the S3X, kudos to you for waiting until it's really ready. That's definitely the better choice.
I love how you're starting to bring back the old logo and look. I build classic/antique bikes and I've never had the luxury of buying a new hub from you since they're painted silver or just unpolished alloy. I know a lot of people watch eBay constantly for old SA hubs simply because they don't want a classic bike with a silver-painted hub. If you had a chrome upgrade option, it would be a hit!
And I'm glad to see the S3X is almost ready. I'm not a fixie guy, but I really want one!
I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of two hubs, the XFDD and the S3X. I know the S3X has been held up by production delays, but what about the XFDD? Is it ever going to be available on QBP again, and how long will I likely have to wait for it?
To xxxMArkxxx we will be offering a new high polish option on all of our hubs very soon. No chrome option but the high polish looks amazing.
To Daniel, I do not know when Quality will be getting more XFDD's in stock. I know they have them on order. If you are looking for one now try United Bicycle Supply, they just restocked and are available.
Soo, any hint on the S3X price? Even if there is a range are we talking in the $100-300 or $400-700?
Also what distributors are going to have have them in the US first?
Thanks and looking fwd to building a new wheel!
Who distributes SA in in Mainland China? I have tried contacting the Taiwan office several times but never a response
Thanks for the tip on United Bicycle Supply. I ordered my front dynohub yesterday. They charge a bit more for the XFDD than QBP did, but I didn't want to wait any more. Now I just need to get an S3X and I can build my wheel set.
I sure would like you guys to make an internal hub to compete with the Rohloff. Personally I don't need 14 gears, but I I do like the 525% range, and a disk brake mount.
What is the cog interface? Shimano splined or something else?
Thanks.
Oh, as an idea to consider for next year's production, how about integrated road brake lever/shifters that can work with the IGHs? Most of the hard work is already done with the Sunrace groups. All you'd have to do is change the number of indexes and the length of cable pull plus add a nice aesthetically matched brake lever that doesn't have any of the shifter internals.
Of course, I say this while having absolutely no knowledge of component manufacturing...
The product looks really well thought out. How is the retooling going for the revision on the driver? Any idea on when the product will go into production?
I was just wondering if SA knows that the name S3X is "leet" (1337) for SEX. So all of us computer nerd fixie cyclists will be able to buy the SEX hub from SA.
I really don't care about the name though, just as long as it can take tons of abuse without a whimper you can call it whatever you want.
I can't wait to get my hands on one...
I like S3X ;)
Just in order to make plans... will it be next month??? next year???... its been a while since last update.
dude I've been checking out the catalog and I'm loving the colors mostly the gold. it will go perfect with my newest project but it would be nice to know a date to look foreword to. I'm literally imploding with anticipation
"Pages 23 through 26 of the Sturmey catalog PDF detail the S3X."
Ahh... the posting format makes it look like the SunRace and Sturmey catalogs are the same thing!
Thanks for the clarification.
I'm currently riding a 2-speed fixie using a Surly Dingle. I've got 44/17=71" for general riding on my 700x38C tires, and 40/21=52" for playing bike polo or prolonged hill-climbing. But each time I change gears it's 2 min. with the wrench, so the S3X will be great.
Looks like I'll able to get a ~70" gear with the S3X in direct drive without plus having 2 lower gears (44", 52"). That's the same as what I have now, plus the added "granny gear of 44".
Bring it on Sturmey Archer!
any new word on this HUB, the S3X? really lookin forward to it. texas.
No new news currently on the S3X. It is still very much a real product and not "Vapor Ware" as many have suggested. As soon as there is news it will be posted here. Thank you everyone for your continued patience.
i'm from indonesia. how can i get new sturmey archer hub (in indonesia espsecially)?
Masyhuga: Please e-mail info@sunrace.com for information on how to order hubs in Indonesia. They should be able to help you out.
